Morans
Real men of genius:
...the GOP plan, which would reduce income taxes across the board, would as a result shove millions over on to the Alternative Income Tax rate, which would be higher for them.
If Boehner was a bagging clerk at a supermarket, you can be sure he'd put bread and eggs at the bottom, canned goods and gallons of milk on top...

Mayor 9/11 insists that rich people don't use their billions JUST to light cigars--they even drop the odd fin or sawbuck to the hired help as a tip:
"Those bonuses, if they are reversed, are going to cause unemployment in New York," the self-described fiscal conservative said. "I remember when I was mayor, one of the ways in which you determine New York City's budget, tax revenue is Wall Street bonuses.
Just. Doesn't. Get. It. Neither does John McCain, who managed a double dose of ineptitude in proclaiming a pity party re: the Obama stimulus bill while racing to the defense of poor little pill popper Rush...I mean, good heavens, it was thinking by the likes of McCain, Guiliani, et al (and the enabling from DLC types [cough]Bill Clinton[cough]) that got us into this mess in the first place. Guiliani, McCain, etc. HAVE BEEN DISCREDITED. Game over. Time to hit the reset button.

Chairman Lamebone
I meant to update a post from yesterday with this amusing ritual straight out from the show trial genre, which speaks volumes as to Lamebone's preeminence amongst the wingnuts.
Which makes Alan Grayson's remarks re: Rush, all the more refreshing.
If they want a lazy, fat, whoremongering, pill-popping drug addict as their spokesperson...or a pissy little fuckwad boor like Dick. Armey. Well...the proper response, IMHO, is
Bring 'em on.
I'll play mature adult versus mental midget any day.

My Compromise With the GOP
OK, my .0000000000000002 cents worth...yes, it's known that Obama himself plays a pretty mean game of poker--but I'm precisely worried about this (short version: things AREN'T looking good, and Obama's being framed by the GOP as this generation's Jimmy Carter, hence their decided lack of cooperation in passing the stimulus bill)...to the extent that I've mentioned it before.
And that's got me wondering a bit about the Obama strategy. I know his record is moderate...even as I enthusiastically voted for him I knew he'd in some ways disappoint me (though having voted for lesser of evils my whole life, it was still refreshing to vote FOR instead of against someone)...but...
If recent events don't demostrate the fundamental bankruptcy, no pun intended, of not only conservative wingnuttery but also that of a major enabler--neo-liberalism--then I worry we might well be seeing Carter redux, and on steroids, after all.
I shudder to think of what could happen then.

Why, There are Studies Underway to Fluoridate Salt, Flour, Fruit Juices, Soup, Sugar, Milk, ICE CREAM? Ice Cream, Mandrake. Children's Ice Cream?
As good an explanation as any for this:
Yaser Alwadeya wanders past a field strewn with the remnants of gaily painted ice cream carts that were shredded by a blizzard of shrapnel. He enters the blackened innards of the Al Ameer factory, which once manufactured Gaza's tastiest ice cream and popsicles. Shaking his head, he says, "I can't figure out why the Israelis thought that Hamas had anything to do with ice cream."
Sorry for being slow to post. It's been a busy day.

Busting the Reagan Myth
Will Bunch has some reality-based observations well worth reading.
What's sadder still is that the Democratic Party not only surrendered to this deeply cynical manipulation, but even prior to Reagan's ascent abandoned the New Deal and Great Society principle of government SERVING THE PEOPLE. Nice job, neo-liberals.

That's one hell of a sliding scale. Black diamond.

The GOP Takes a Sudden Interest in Housing
Again, I don't see the Obama Administration's motivation for negotiations with an opposition that is really just flailing about, looking for something, anything that might salvage the abject, epic failure their grand ideology managed to produce.

Compassionate Conservativism
It's the Freeper reactions that really speak volumes. Narrow minded, selfish pinheads don't get more narrowminded, selfish...and pinheaded than that.
Which is why I don't really understand the Obama administration's insistance on dealing with their representation in Congress, and the compromises made in doing so. To me that's sort of like dividing by zero.

Gone But Not Forgotten
The Bush administration dénouement:
It's already been a lousy year for workers less than a month into 2009 and there's no relief in sight. Tens of thousands of fresh layoffs were announced Monday and more companies are expected to cut payrolls in the months ahead.
A new survey by the National Association for Business Economics depicts the worst business conditions in the U.S. since the report's inception in 1982.
Thirty-nine percent of NABE's forecasters predicted job reductions through attrition or "significant" layoffs over the next six months, up from 32 percent in the previous survey in October. Around 45 percent in the current survey anticipated no change in hiring plans, while roughly 17 percent thought hiring would increase.
The recession, which started in December 2007, and is expected to stretch into this year, has been a job killer. The economy lost 2.6 million jobs last year, the most since 1945. The unemployment rate jumped to 7.2 percent in December, the highest in 16 years, and is expected to keep climbing.
"Job losses accelerated in the fourth quarter, and the employment outlook for the next six months has weakened further," said Sara Johnson, NABE's lead analyst on the survey and an economist at IHS Global Insight.
Thousands more jobs cuts were announced Monday. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc., which is buying rival drugmaker Wyeth in a $68 billion deal, and Sprint Nextel Corp., the country's third-largest wireless provider, said they each will slash 8,000 jobs. Home Depot Inc., the biggest home improvement retailer in the U.S., will get rid of 7,000 jobs, and General Motors Corp. said it will cut 2,000 jobs at plants in Michigan and Ohio due to slow sales.
To repeat once again, it's not like the guy didn't have a record of failure...
