Deja Vu All Over Again
One of the points I hope gets emphasized from the
Ken Burns Prohibition series came from, I think, Catherine Murdock. She pointed out how the hubris and intransigence of the movement was both the source of its success and the root of its ultimate failure...kind of like the Tea Party. Gives me some comfort and cause for hope.
Of course, the downside is that generation of culture warriors managed to hold the floor for more than a dozen years. They wreaked havok in all sorts of ways, some of which we're still dealing with. And their cause was alcohol, not the dismantling of the entire federal government...and women's rights...and religious freedom...and lots of other stuff.
