Sorry to drag the late Robert Palmer into this (don't have particularly strong feelings for him one way or the other), but IMHO an
editorial earlier this week about the pathology of Wall Street could easily be reworked to explain the pathology of wingnuttery. It's not like their hatred was ever particularly useful, but the pursuit of hate has come to truly define them. They don't care about much of, well, anything -- not even their alleged religious scruples -- but instead have locked into hate as a goal in itself. And that's the real legacy of "conservatism."
It's going to continue to be an awfully bumpy ride -- emphasis on "awful."
Nothing good can come from this crap. Hate is totally negative. I don't hate anything or anybody. Hate, done right, takes a great deal of time and energy. I know/knew people who did hate. It took so much of their time every day and they never did anything really good. They couldn't. Not enough energy left to do real good. oh, they went through the motions and fooled some of their church pals, but big deal.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I do despise some people to hell and gone, but that doesn't take much energy or time.
Hate cannot produce anything worth having or of any decent value. They are too damn stupid to see that truth. Too bad for them, no compassion from me, sorry. No, not really sorry. The sad thing is, they will hurt many innocent bystanders before they go down in flames. Sick puppies, the lot of them.
Hate takes a lot of energy, but it's sadly very seductive...and, despite the energy it takes, it's still easier than respect/love/tolerance, whatever you want to call it. Respect means you'll appreciate someone despite their very human flaws -- we've all got 'em -- but hate allows you to deny another person's humanity...for those same human flaws.
ReplyDeleteThat's why attack ads are so popular in politics, as is negative campaigning...regardless of what politicians say. Add in a generation of Newt Gingriches, Ann Coulters, etc., who've done as much as they can to poison the well, and...voila. Welcome to the state of politics, USA, where a Rockefeller Republican like...Barack Obama...is savaged as the Ant Christ, or at least the ghost of Karl Marx (or maybe his shade, because, you know, black).
Anyway...part of me's almost glad I won't be around to see much of the finale...maybe a little...and it's not going to be pretty.
