Michael, Sorry to mess with your weekend, but I wonder if you have seen the following. http://www.salon.com/2013/11/21/exclusive_gop_senator_unloads_in_priavte_call Seems that US(?) senator Mark Kirk (R) Illinois is more like a senator from Israel. This is a direct quote from the linked article; ".....totally dedicated to the survival of the state of Israel." Yes, a US(??) senator is "totally dedicated" to the survival of a foreign country. Now I may not be the brightest bulb on the old xmas tree, but isn't a US senator supposed to be dedicated to the survival of the US of A? Oh, and along with said US survival, I seem to recall that members of BOTH houses of congress swear an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution of the US of A. But, as I said, I am just an old working class guy, so I may be way off base with my speculation. Yes, I was being a bit sarcastic here, NOT at you sir, at politicians like Mr. Kirk and his ilk. LOL, man, I get a kick out of using that word......ilk. And no, those ilk are not the deer looking critters that folks hunt for. Just in case some tea party people may have stopped by for a read. Cheers Michael. Have a great weekend. Great Friday post, again.
Well, I only am able to reply today (Monday), but...Mark Kirk, eh? The guy who won the Senate seat held by...Barack Obama.
Kirk's a genuine oddball -- very slightly less extreme on health care reform...but that's because he had a MAJOR health issue -- a stroke -- that almost killed him and still clearly affects his mobility. Once it affects him personally...
Sigh.
As for Israel, I've pretty much given up trying to convince anyone about, oh, I don't know, fairness in foreign policy...I mean, for crying out loud, they've got nuclear weapons. It's not like they are (or ever were) poor defenseless little Israel surviving on pluck and luck...
While I'm not Jewish, and neither pro nor anti-Zionist, I'm realistic enough to know Israel -- or, as some of the Arab press associations say or used to say, The Zionist Entity (a Moroccan friend told me that one) -- anyway, Israel going to stick around. It'd be nice if our politicians understood that, and showed some courage in...being friendly if they choose, but not obsequious, if I remember the right definition of obsequious. Hell, I wouldn't mind a nation of Israel based on the UN 242 resolution with swaps, which I think was the Oslo framework.
But...um...I'm obviously never going to get elected dog catcher, much less Senator, where one must say certain things...to appease both AIPAC and the wingnut fundies (talk about strange bedfellows, as I'm sure you know). Funny how that sort of appeasement is never questioned, but the chance to NOT kill Iranians is the modern equivalent of Neville Chamberlain...

Anyway, take it easy, Charlie.
